The 6th Taishin Arts Award Exhibition - National Chinese Orchestra, NCO Concert: The Silk Road FantasyNational Chinese Orchestra / BiographyIn September, 1984, National Taiwan University of Arts Experimental Chinese Music Orchestra was funded and assisted to have concerts by Ministry of Education. They were not only performing regularly in National Theatre & National Concert Hall, but also having musical tours in Culture Centers, schools and communities in Taiwan for educational campaigns of arts. They were in charge of the Chinese music performing programs of Council for Cultural Affairs as well. In February, 1990, Executive Yuan passed "Points of funding an Experimental Chinese Music Orchestra" and authorized that from 1992, the Orchestra would be extended into 93 members in 3 years, so their main duty thereafter extended from simple performing to publishing and educational campaigns.Since National Experimental Chinese Music Orchestra is from a small team into a big Orchestra, each group is trained very well for a long time; therefore their unique performing is various and excellent. No matter Solos, Ensembles, Little Ensembles or Great Ensembles, their delicate and sophisticating performing can always touch the audience's heart with the floating notes. National Experimental Chinese Music Orchestra is good at various styles of music; they have a close cooperation with many composers to develop different types of works, and to step on another level of performing. They also hope to build a contemporary music culture from the traditional spirits of Chinese music.Aside from the local concerts, National Experimental Chinese Music Orchestra had also experiences of tour concerts in France, England, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Our first oversea Chinese Information and Culture Center had grand opening in New York and they were invited as Elite to perform 6 concerts and then were invited to perform in Harvard University, Holmel Auditorium AT&T Bell Laboratories, and Savannah Asian Festival. Their marvelous performances were greatly appreciated by people around the world.Now, National Experimental Chinese Music Orchestra is continuing their performing and developing other corresponding business. Sometimes known in the West as the “Chinese violin” or “Chinese two-string fiddle,” Erhu is a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras.
The Erhu consists of a long vertical stick-like neck, at the top of which are two large tuning pegs, and at the bottom is a small resonator body (sound box) which is covered with python skin on the front (playing) end. Two strings are attached from the pegs to the base, and a small loop of string (qian jin) placed around the neck and strings acting as a nut pulls the strings towards the skin, holding a small wooden bridge in place. The two stars of the ensemble are the 85 year old Lu Chunling (standing on the picture with his flute) and the 72 year old Li Yi (sitting, holding his banjo). Lu is a master of the bamboo flute. His instrument and virtuosity lead him to play in front of well known people as Queen Elizabeth II and Mao Zedong. The lively and lovely grandpa told the audience during the performance that he has been in the Netherlands 50 years ago, quite some things have changed since his first visit, when he was in his mid-30s. Li Yi is a recognized player of the Chinese banjo. Xu Fengxia (behind her citer on the picture) and Zhang Zhenfang were contributing to the great performance with their instruments, the citer and the erhu.
[BOTTOM Right Video] "The Spring on the Tianshan Mountaon" (天山之春), composed by the renowned pipa master Wang Fandi （王范地）, is one of the famous piece from Xinjiang uyghur folk (dance) music （新疆民歌）.
Xinjiang (Northwest of China) is located right on the "silk road", which played an important role in the commercial and cultural exchanges between the east and the west.

The current piece is originally for pipa solo. In this demo video, pipa soloist Liu Fang performed with percussionist Ziya Tabassian (from Persia, now in Montreal), concert live recording.

1986年在广汉三星堆发现的两个大“祭祀坑”，其中一号坑为长方形土坑，口大底小，坑口长4.5-4.64米，宽2.3-3.48米；坑底较平，长4.1米宽2.8米，深1.46-1.64米。坑的四角基本为正东、西、南、北方向。坑内填有黄褐色五花土，经层层夯实。
一号坑内出土有金、玉、石、骨、陶、象牙等质料的文物300余件以及海贝和3立方米的骨渣。据发掘者根据现场情况分析，埋入的器物是按一定次序投入的。其中玉戈、璋等形制教大的玉石器主要在东部坑壁的东端；玉凿、玉锛、石斧等形制较小的放置在坑的西南；大型铜器如人头像、人面像、铜尊等主要分布在坑的西南部；象牙主要在坑的中部；金杖则出土于坑的中部偏西。出土器物的类型主要有，青铜器：跪坐人像、头像（可分三种类型），爬龙柱形器、虎形器、罍、尊、盘、器盖等；金器：金杖、面罩、虎形饰；玉器：璋（有四形）、戈（三形）、凿（分六形）、锛、瑗、锄、斤、匕、斧、佩以及石器、象牙、海贝等。
二号坑也为长方形，坑壁微斜，长5.3米，宽2.2-2.3米，坑口至坑底深1.4-1.68米，坑底长5米，宽2-2.1米。坑底西南高，东北低，坑内填五花土，填土经夯打。
根据发掘现场情况分析，坑内的遗物投放也是有一定先后次序的。表现为三次投放，因此遗物亦可分为三层：下层主要为大量的草木灰烬、碳屑、小型青铜器、青铜兽面、青铜树枝、玉石器及大量的海贝等；中层主要为大件的青铜器，如大型立人像、太阳器、大型人面像、人头像、树、尊、罍等；上层则为60余枚（节）大盎门齿纵横交错在一起。这些遗物在清理时，大部分都杂在灰烬骨屑里，并留下明显的烟薰火烧痕迹。其后再投入大型的青铜容器、青铜人像、头像、人面、树座等；最后放入象牙。大青铜立人像腰部断成两截，分别位于坑的中部和西北部。……头像和面像尤其是人面像，大部分被打坏或烧坏。[1]
很显然，这两个“祭祀坑”里的器物都是人为投放进去的，并且是有意破坏以后掩埋的。而且这两个坑里的东西都是非常贵重，非常神圣的器物。在生产力不发达的古蜀时期这些器物可以说是他们所有的大部分宝贝，也是他们的主要精神寄托。但是，他们为什么要毁坏这些宝物并且掩埋它们呢？是古蜀人自己干的这件事吗？关于这个问题，确实给大家带来了很大的疑惑，学者们提出了许多的假说，这些假说是：
1、“祭祀坑”说。这是目前学术界占主流的认识。并得到众多同行的认可。该说认为两坑是三星堆古蜀国民进行祭祀后的遗迹。其中包括“燎祭”与“瘗埋”的过程，即将祭物用火焚烧后埋葬。致于祭祀的对象则为天、地、山川及祖先神祗等。
2、“厌胜”说。这种说法出现较早，其比较注重青铜像和神树是被毁掉后埋掉的——对这奇特现象，从民族学材料入手，从古代巫术的概念出发，认为这些神像“不灵”而加以打击、虐待、丢弃或烧毁，以此来刺激灵物。在此基础上，“厌胜”论者还进一步推测“厌胜”活动与蜀地洪水及战乱有关，并而联想到古蜀世系中的杜宇、开明氏的政权更迭。[2

Deep within China near the ancient capitol of Xi'an lies a series of pyramid mounds virtually unknown outside the country. Entwined with the reality of these remote tombs, lies a legend of an even greater pyramid seldom seen; a pyramid of such size and grandeur as to put all the other pyramids of the world to shame. This is the legend of the white pyramid of China.
Interest in Chinese pyramids was greatly increased by the 1994 publication of Hartwig Hausdorf's Die Weisse Pyramide later translated into English under the revised title The Chinese Roswell (1998) in which he briefly describes his travels through China in search of the legendary great white pyramid of China. Hausdorf never locates his prize, but he did return from China with a series of photos of pyramid mounds that have been widely published in books and magazines and circulated on the Internet

(B)According to another source: Sanxingdui (Three-Star Piles) Museum;
Sanxingdui refers to three earth mounds at the site. Hence the site found here is called Sanxingdui Relic. The Relic area stretches for about 12 square kilometers (about 4.6 square miles), which is the largest, oldest, and most connotational Shu cultural relic in Sichuan. It is said that the Heavenly Emperor cast down three handfuls of earth which fell near the Jian River and became three earth mounds on Chengdu Plain. The three earth piles, described as three golden stars in a line, hence became known as Sanxingdui (three-star piles).

For Chinese classical poems , there were certain “unspoken” set format , the meaning in expression consisting of phrases/ clauses of either 3 or 4 or 5 or 7 characters per line. Rhyming or not was not important. These were common guideline and also a popular trend different from one dynasty than the others. Simply because of trend/fashion depending on political and social state.
In ancient time, poems were one very essential mode of expression of thoughts and feeling, could be political, social ( protest on issues ) ,personal (like diary or BLOGG),confidential communication and EDUCATION to the public at large. To the lay readers they MIGHT/MAY read them SIMPLY LIKE COMICS NOWADAYS. Yes they WERE comparable to NOWADAY COMICS, nevertheless it only take a CAREFUL and THOUGHTFUL readers to ciphers the content, likewise for the writer it WAS both a SKILLFUL AND PAINFUL task. With these in mind then only one can REALise the TRUE sentiments and appreciate the value of the writing . The role of seals in the Chinese culture can hardly be overestimated. For the last 3,000 years they have been used in official, private, even magic spheres. The earliest examples of seals come from the Shang dynasty (BCE 16-11 c.) from the archeological sites at Anyang. However very little is known about their usage at this early stage, it is only starting from the Spring and Autumn period (BCE 722-481) that we begin to see an increased quantity of seals paired with textual references to them. According to a Han dynasty story, the first seal was given to the Yellow Emperor by a yellow dragon with a chart on its back. Another story says that it was given to Emperor Yao by a phoenix as the emperor was sitting in a boat. In any case, the receipt of the seal signifies the conferral of the Mandate of Heaven. He who has the seal possesses the Mandate of Heaven, in other words, he has been given the right to rule the empire. So when Tang, the first ruler of the Shang dynasty overthrows the last tyrant of the previous Xia dynasty, he seizes the royal seal and thus establishes his power.

IMPERIAL SEAL:
Until the end of Warring States period (BCE 403-221), there was only one way of calling seals, both official and private, regardless of their use and material. This name was xi, which in the following periods gradually became the designation for imperial seals. According to the History of Tang dynasty, Empress Wu (634-705) issued an order to change the word xi, which was up until then used for imperial seals, to bao (treasure). Apparently, she disliked the fact that the word xi was close in sound to the si (death). But when Emperor Zhongzong resumed the throne in 705, he changed the name for imperial seals back to xi. In subsequent centuries the two words were alternated, depending on the period.
At the time of the Han dynasty, the emperor had six seals, during the Tang he had eight, during the Ming over a dozen, and by the time of the Qing, there were several dozens of official imperial seals. The inscription on these official seals usually refers to receiving the Mandate of Heaven or being the successor of Heaven.
Another type of imperial seal was a seal that the emperor used to indicate that a certain document was written in his own handwriting. Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) for example, was famous for his literary ambitions, including calligraphy, and had produced a large amount of texts affixed with his seal. When his calligraphy was carved into stone steles, the seal was copied onto the surface of the stone too.
Yet another seal was used by the emperors to appraise and appreciate art. It was customary for collectors and connoisseurs of art to affix their seals on the surface of a scroll of painting or calligraphy. The paintings acquired by the imperial household were affixed by the imperial seal. Many famous paintings from the Forbidden City have seals of generations of subsequent emperors on them.

Official seals have been conferred to officials as a token of their office and authority. These seals were usually small enough to be carried on the official's belt. There were regulations as to the material and shape of the handle of these seals: some had to be golden, some copper, some with a handle in the shape of a turtle, some of a camel. Up to the Eastern Han dynasty (25-330), the color of ink used to affix official seals was regulated depending on the position of the owner, some officials had to use green ink, some purple, some yellow etc.

The calligraphy of the inscription had changed a great deal over the long span of Chinese history. Approaching the Han dynasty, the characters on the seal inscriptions tend to become thicker and more angular. From the Sui dynasty (581-618), they become rounded and thinner, and during the Song and Yuan periods we can witness the spectacular jiudie (nine-folded) script. In the Qing period, most official seals are bilingual with the Chinese inscription on the right side and the Manchu on the left.

Private seals
Private seals are naturally unregulated, therefore they show the largest variety in content, shape, size, material and calligraphy. Despite of their varied characteristics, they can still be categorized based on their use.
Seals with names, pen names, pseudonyms etc on them were used as a signature by people in their private life. This is how artists sign their works and letters. Chinese literati commonly used a number of different pen names so identifying a person's name from a seal can be a tricky business.
Collector seals were mainly used for the purpose of authenticating pieces of art. Thus a seal of a famous collector or connoisseur would become an integral part of a work of art and could substantially raise its value. Thus in the course of several centuries, some Chinese paintings became covered by a dozen of different seals.
The rest of private seals can be conveniently categorized under the umbrella term "leisure seals". The inscription on these seals is usually a short text which is either a quote from a famous writing or just some saying that the owner thought important. Typical inscriptions are "Respect fate", "Attain wisdom", "Respect", "Use loyalty and humanity in your affairs" etc. One could compare these seals to signatures with a quote at the end of email messages where the people append some saying they consider valuable at the end of their message.

TEA HISTORY:
The favourite choice of beverage by the Chinese is TEA, comparable to wine is to the French, beer is to the Germans, as cigars are to the Cubans. Tea has formed the essence of Chinese social life and culture for over five millennia. According to legend, tea was discovered by chance by Emperor Shen Nong during the Five Rulers Era. Leaves from a nearby plant fell into a boiling kettle and the aroma of the brew was so enticing that the Emperor could not resist taking a sip. He marvelled at his own discovery and made the drink a national beverage. The plant was what is today commonly known as Camellia, which grows wild in China

The earliest known book written about proper techniques for brewing fine tea and art of tea-drinking was written during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) by poet Lu Yu.
Tea is a HOBBY far more than a thirst quencher in China. Many people appreciate the art form of brewing and drinking tea. The tea culture involved is relaxing, allowing people to supposedly forget all their troubles during the process of brewing, serving and drinking tea.
Making a good pot of tea is not so easy. With tea of the same quality, one can produce different tastes by using different water, tea sets and brewing techniques. Tea of top quality should be brewed with top-grade water. Teaware embellished with artistic designs are needed to complement the elegance of tealeaves. Brewing time, water temperature, and the ratio of water to tealeaves depends on tea quality and category.
TEA CATOGORY: According to the lengths of fermentation and the level of treatment, tea can be divided into six principal varieties.
· Green Tea = unfermented, produced by steaming fresh-picked leaves. It turns yellowish-green when brewed and has a delicate taste. Top brands include Longjing in Zhejiang Province, Maofeng of Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province, and Biluochun in Jiangsu Province.
White Tea =slightly fermented and achieves a mellow, sweet flavour;
· Black Tea = fully fermented before firing. It carries a bright reddish colour and yields a hearty-flavoured, amber brew. Black tea, known as "Red Tea" (hong cha) in China, is fermented before baking. The best brands are Qihong in Anhui, Dianhong in Yunnan, Suhong in Jiangsu, Chuanhong in Sichuan and Huhong in Hunan.

Oolong Tea = indigenous to the Fujian province of China. It is only partially oxidised and produces a cross between green and black tea when boiled. It is bright yellow in colour and has a fruity taste Wulong tea abounds in Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan along China's southeast coast.
Pu'er-type Tea = a variation of green tea, oolong tea or black tea and is fully fermented. When brewed, it turns dark brown;
Scented Tea = a blend of tea leaves and fresh, sweet flowers. The flowers commonly used for this purpose are jasmine and magnolia among others. Jasmine tea is a well-known favorite among the northerners in China.

Generally speaking, the standard amount by the professional tea brewer when brewing a pot of tea, is 3 grams of tea brewed with 150 cubic centimeters of water for 5 minutes.

Generally, people use boiled water to brew old tealeaves, while cooling down the boiled water a little bit to brew tender tealeaves. For example, top-grade green tea and some famous kinds of tea, which should be picked when they are tender, cannot be brewed with boiling water. So one should wait until the water temperature cools down to about 80 degrees Celsius. In this way, the tea will have clear water, a pure scent, fresh taste and brightly-colored leaves.

Wherever Chinese go, the custom of drinking tea follows. The Chinese were the first to discover the tea leaf, and have drunk tea for uncounted ages. When you arrive in the beautiful island of Taiwan, you may see some elderly gentlemen seated in twos and threes, perhaps in a temple up some old street. They may be leisurely gathered around a simple but attractive teapot about the size of a fist, each holding a small cup, mixing chat with drink. This is the traditional Chinese "old men's tea" ceremony (lao-jen ch'a). While strolling down the bustling streets of metropolitan Taipei, your nose might also lead you to a "tea art" shop, identified by a large sign with the Chinese character for "tea" (ch'a) on it. If the prospect of a tea-tasting experience intrigues you, an expert on the beverage will initiate you in the basics of "kung fu tea," or the traditional tea-steeping and drinking ritual.
Tea is an indispensable part of the life of a Chinese. A Chinese saying identifies the seven basic daily necessities as fuel, rice, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and tea. The custom of drinking tea is deeply ingrained in almost every Chinese, and has been for over a thousand years. During the mid-T'ang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), a man named Lu Yu entered the Buddhist monkhood early in life, but returned when older to secular life. He was later best known for summarizing the knowledge and experience of his predecessors and contemporaries into the first compendium in the world on tea--the Tea Classic (ch'a Ching). This work helped to popularize the art of tea drinking all across China, making avid tea drinkers of everyone from emperor and minister to street hawker and soldier. Even the neighboring countries of Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia came to adopt the tea drinking custom.
Chinese were the first to discover tea.
In the early 17th century, the Dutch East India Company introduced Chinese tea for the first time to Europe. By the mid-17th century, afternoon tea had become a standard ritual of the British nobility. It is interesting to note that the two different pronunciations for "tea" most common in languages that borrowed the word from Chinese-cha and tee-originate from different dialects of Chinese. Languages of countries that once imported the leaves from the north of China, such as Turkey, Russia, and Japan, adopted some variation of the sound cha, such as chay, chai, or chya. Countries on the southern maritime lines of China, such as Spain, Germany, and England, borrowed the word in the forms of te, Tee, and tea respectively, based on the southern Chinese pronunciation.
Tea is made from the young, tender leaves of the tea tree. The differences among the many kinds of tea available are based on the particular methods used to process the leaves. The key to the whole process is the roasting and fermentation. Through fermentation, the originally deep green leaves become reddish-brown in color. The longer the fermentation, the darker the color. Depending on the length of the roasting and degree of fermentation, the fragrance can range from floral, to fruity, to malty.
Tea that has not been fermented is called "green tea." Tea steeped from green tea leaves is jade green to yellow-green in color, and gives off the fragrance of fresh vegetables. Examples of green tea are "Dragon Well" (Lung-ching) and "Green Snail Spring" (Pi-lo-ch'un). The Chinese call tea that undergoes full fermentation "red tea" (hung-ch'a); in the West it is known as "black tea." Tea made from black tea leaves is reddish-brown in color and has a malt-like aroma. Oolong, or "Black Dragon" (Wu-Lung) tea is an example of a partially-fermented tea. This tea is unique to China, and Taiwan is one of its most representative areas of production.
Oolong tea comes in three degrees of fermentation: lightly fermented, moderately fermented, and fully fermented. The identifying features of lightly fermented Oolong tea, such as Paochung, are a full aroma, clarity, and a golden color. Moderately fermented types such as "lron Buddha" (T'ie-kuan-yin), "Narcissus" (Shui-hsien), and "Frozen Peak" (Tung-ting), have a brown color, a full "mature" flavor that appeals more to the sense of taste than that of smell, and a vaguely sweet aftertaste. Tea infused from moderately to heavily fermented tea leaves like "White Hair" Oolong (Pai-hao Wu-lung) has a red-orange color and a fruity aroma.
To make a good pot of tea, special attention must be pald to the quality of the water, water temperature, the amount of tea leaves used, and the type of teapot. Soft water (water with a low mineral content) that is clear and fresh is required to steep tea; hard water should by all means be avoided. The correct water temperature varies from tea to tea; for most fully fermented and moderately fermented kinds it should be near boiling (100 or 212); however, it may be low as 90 (194) or less for lightly fermented or green teas.
"Cultivating teapots" through repeated use is a popular and refined pastime in Taiwan.
The proportion of tea leaves to water also depends on the kind of tea leaves used. The teapot may be filled from one-quarter to three-quarters full with tea leaves, depending mainly on how tightly curled the tea leaves are as a result of the rolling and roasting processes. The teapot is then filled with water. Steeping time starts at one minute, but varies from tea to tea. The time required for subsequent brews from the same leaves must be proportionally lengthened. The best kind of teapot to use for most fermented teas is a purple clay ceramic pot. The size of the pot should be in correct proportion to the size of the cups. Ideally, the cups should have white interiors, to facilitate accurate assessment of the color of the tea.
People enamored of tea drinking also usually enjoy the beauty and feel of teapots. Small teapots are used to steep tea (in the "kung fu" steeping method) in most homes in the Republic of China today. This particular method has been passed down to the present day from the days of Ming Dynasty Emperor Shen Tsung in 16th century China, so it boasts a 400-year history. The full aroma and sweetness of the tea can be brought out when using a small teapot to steep tea. During the Ming (1368-1644) and Ch'ing (1644-1911) dynasties, the purple clay ceramic teapots of Yihsing, Kiangsu were the most famous. Any pieces made by a master potter are sought after everywhere, and are worth their weight in gold. While master potters in the Republic of China continue to produce traditional purple clay ceramic teapots, they have also developed a number of creative new teapot designs which have received enthusiastic public response. Collecting teapots has become a fashionable pastime.
Tea is China's national drink. Tea contains vitamins, tea derivatives, essential oils, and fluoride. It is a diuretic, attributed with the properties of improving the eyesight and increasing alertness, so Chinese believe that frequent tea drinkers enjoy an increased life span. The Chinese people are without a doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea. Tea has a long history over 2,000 years old, and is a common thread running through our culture. Tea drinking has become a form of artistic and intellectual expression in Chinese culture, and is rich in tradition. Many relationship with tea, though of superficial origins, grew more and more profound over time. The significance of tea began to assert itself in the Tang and Song Dynasties. It was during this time that the art of tea was born. The Tea Classics, written by Lu Yu during the Tang Dynasty, helped to elevate tea drinking to a high status throughout China.
It was somewhere between the Tang and Song Dynasties that the custom of tea drinking was brought to Japan, which readily adopted the Chinese custom. But there were, and still are, differences between the Japanese and Chinese interpretations of the art of tea drinking.
Chinese people tend to view tea drinking as a natural form of enjoyment, unlike the Japanese, who approach the concept in a very strict and ritualistic fashion. In spite of its popularity throughout the ages, the Chinese have never elevated tea to the god-like status it enjoys in Japan. Rather, tea is something one drinks after a meal; it is merely a part of one's life. For a Chinese to say anything more of tea than this would be to misunderstand its purpose, which can be anything but to be worshipped. The attitude Chinese take toward tea drinking is in many ways symbolic of their relatively balanced position towards different attitudes and behaviors. One could say that in the Chinese interpretation of the art of tea, one can find the source their open mindedness.
But it wasn't until the Song Dynasty that tea drinking really became in vogue. Even the Emperor indulged in this new and wonderful custom, which subsequently drew tea-growers to the capital every spring to pay tribute to the Son of Heaven. The Emperor gave tea as a gift to those worthy of the honor, which not only helped increase the drink's popularity, but also helped spread elevate its value. Books, poems, and paintings about tea became increasingly popular.
With the passing of the Yuan, and the start of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the technology of tea production was constantly being improved; not only in an effort to enhance its flavor, but also to further simplify its production. By this time, tea houses were popping up all over the country. Tea-drinking establishments could be found at any public gathering place or point of interest; temples, palaces, even famous mountains had their respective tea vendors.
Li Ri Hua, a Ming Dynasty scholar, once said: "One should clean out a room in one's home and place only a tea table and a chair in the room with some boiled water and fragrant tea. Afterwards, sit salutarily and allow one's spirit to become ranquil, light, and natural." Li Ri Hua used tea drinking to calm his spirit and clear his mind. He practiced the art of living naturally, avoiding outside influences.
During the same period, a man by the name of Luo likened the drinking of tea to a spiritual release, unique to every individual. It was people like Luo who cultivated the artistic conception of tea, which represents the Chinese way of turning the mundane things in life into ones of higher meaning.
Though its history is indeed lengthy, the art of tea drinking is not without competition. The introduction of coffee by the West, along with its own culture, is believed by some to be destroying the virtues of tea drinking in the modern age with slick advertising that promotes outside values and life-stles. Now, coffee houses in Taiwan outnumber their tea-peddling counterparts, driving them slowly out of business. Even though the quality of Taiwanese tea has improved over the years, tea drinking simply cannot compete any longer.
Over the last few years, through the efforts of people who care deeply for the culture and history of tea, various tea associations have been founded. This, along with the publication of many books and articles on the subject, has begun a tea revival of sorts. But we must be careful not to let the art of tea drinking become some complex concept that is difficult to appreciate or to understand. Only by returning to the old principles of simplicity and universality can we hope to see the art of tea regain its popularity or old.

All teas come from the plant Camellia Sinensis.
All teas that are classified under the six main types of tea that is. It does not include herbal teas or other teas that do not include the real tea leaves. This plant is rich in antioxidants which have been shown to fight aging.
It is an interesting fact that the English tea and the Chinese Oolong or the Japanese green teas all come from the same plant. However, they taste different because of the differences in the manufacturing process.

An introduction to Japanese tea
In Japan, only green tea is grown, brewed and drunk. They are consumed in every day life or during elaborate Japanese tea ceremony.
The most high class tea from Japan is Gyoku ro from Shizuoka prefecture. This is a type of green tea. To non-Japanese drinkers, the tea may taste a little strong due to the seaweed taste in it. This type of tea is used during the Japanese tea ceremony and is in the powder form. The tea powder is green in colour and has a staining effect. Thus, it can be used to dye clothes and garments to produce beautiful green clothing or textile.
Other ordinary Japanese tea is ryoku cha. It is typically from Yame from Fukuoka, Shirancha from Kagoshima, Shizuoka teas.

Oolong
Oolong is semi-fermented. It is grown specially in the southern regions of China like Taiwan, Guangdong and Fujian. One of the most famous tea regions in Fujina is Anxi. This is where one of the founders of our website originted from. His father was a tea farmer from Anxi.

There are 11 main types of Oolong. Japanese too love Oolong tea. They buy them in prepared containers and these are processed tea. Oolong is also a favourite drink amongst Southeast Asians. Starting around 4000 B.C. traditional Chinese painting has developed continuously over a period of more than six thousand years. Its growth has inevitably reflected the changes of time and social conditions. In its early stage of development, Chinese painting was closely related to the other crafts, from pottery to the decorations used on the bronzes, carved jade and lacqerware.
Following the introduction of Buddhism to China from India during the 1st century A.D. and the consequent carving of grottoes and building of temples, the art of painting religious murals gradually gained in prominence.
The range of subject matters dealt with in figure painting was extended far beyond religious themes during the Song dynasty(960-1127),. Paintings of historical character and stories of everyday life became extremely popular. Techniques were also further refined.
Landscape painting had already established itself as an independent form of expression by the 4th century. Then gradually developed into the two separate styles of “blue-and-green landscapes” and “ink-and-wash landscape”. The blue-and-green landscape used bright blue, green and red pigments derived from minerals to create a richly decorative style. The ink-and wash landscape relied on vivid brushwork and varying degrees of intensity of ink to express the artist's conception of nature, and his own emotions and individuality.
Flower-and-bird painting was separated from decorative art to form an independent genre around the 9th century. A great many artists painted in this genre during the Song dynasty and their subject matter included a rich variety of flowers, fruits, insects and fish. Many of the scholar painters working with ink and brush used a great economy of line. They produced paintings of such things as plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums, pines and cypresses, using their subject matter to reflect their own ideals and character.
Modern painters have often mixed several colors on one brush or mixed their colors with black inks. As a result, they have obtained more natural and richly varied colors. Such techniques have been widely adopted and further developed in the contemporary period.
Artistic Character and Techniques
One of the important factors contributing to the evolution of the distinctive style of traditional Chinese painting has been the close relationship between the materials used and their influence on artistic forms and techniques.
Chinese Brush
First, there is the Chinese brush. Though similar to the brush used for watercolor painting in the West, it has a finer tip suitable for dealing with a wide range of subjects and for producing the variations in line required by different styles. Since the materials used for calligraphy and painting are essentially the same, developments in calligraphic styles and techniques can also be used in painting.
Brush Techniques and Strokes
The ancients used the expression yu pi yu mo(to have brush, to have ink). These show the significance of the meaning for the two terms pi(brush) and mo(ink).The brush techniques so much emphasized in Chinese painting include not only line drawing but also the stylized expressions of shade and texture (cunfa) and the dotting methods(dianfa) used mainly to differentiate trees and plants and also for simple embellishment.
The brush strokes give the painting rhythm and beauty and depict the subject's outward and inner qualities. At the same time, they reveal the individuality and style of the painter himself.
Type of Painting Brushes:
· Hsieh chao pi: Crab claw brush, large and small sizes
· Hua jan pi: brush for painting flowers
· Lan yu chu pi: brush for painting orchids and bamboo

· T’u hao pi: rabbit's hair brush
· u ying pi: Hunan sheep's hair brush
Chinese Ink
Second, there is the i. Ink has been used in calligraphy and painting for over two thousand years. When the ink cake is ground on the painter's stone slab with fresh water, ink of various consistencies can be prepared depending on the amount of water used. Thick ink is very deep and glossy when applied to paper or silk. Thin ink appears lively and translucent. As a result, in ink-and-wash paintings it is possible to use ink alone to create a rhythmic balance between brightness and darkness, and density and lightness, and to create an impression of the subject's texture, weight and coloring.
Paper and Silk
Third, there is paper or silk. Chinese painting may be done either on Chinese paper or silk.
Chinese Paper
The original paper(around 100 AD.)was made from many different materials including pulp, old fishing nets and bark. Modern paper is often machine made. It is classed in degrees of weight and amount of size used. The paper is very absorbent and the amount of size in it will dictate the quantity of ink used for strokes on the paper. Different paper produce different results; some are rough and absorb ink quickly like a sponge, others have a smooth surface which resists ink. Chinese paper is usually known as rice paper in English.
Chinese Silk Before painting on silk, the silk should be treated with alum and glue before use. This method makes silk less absorbent than paper. Brushstroke is best shown on paper. Because of this reason and the paper's variety of texture and finish, paper quickly became favored by artists and calligraphers.
Chinese Color
Fourth, there are the colors. There are differences in the use of color between Chinese painting and modern western painting. Chinese painting aim is not to express the various shades of color of the subject in relation to a fixed source of light, but to express the characteristics of the different subjects.
For example, the adding of traces of brown or green to rocks, trees, leaves, grass and moss in a painting is used to reinforce the feeling of a particular season or state of the weather.
Composition and Space
Fifth, there are composition and space. Since the creative requirements of Chinese painting do not demand strict adherence to reality or to a particular angle of view or source of light, the painter has complete freedom in terms of artistic conception, structural composition and method of expression. To give prominence to the main subject, it is quite permissible to omit the background entirely and simply leave it blank. At the same time, since the sizes and shapes of the spaces in the painting are different, the very absence of content can itself create rhythm and variety. Sometimes the variety and balance created in this way is further enriched by the addition of inscriptions in the empty space.
Chinese landscape painters’ aim is to depict the familiar mountains and rivers of China from the perspective of nature as a whole and on the basis of their understanding of the laws of nature. In artistic conception and structural composition, most landscape paintings create the impression that the scene is viewed from high in the air, as if seen through the eyes of a bird.
With flower-and-bird paintings, sometimes a single flower hangs as if suspended in space, or the flowers and plants of different seasons appear together. Explained by one of the Ming painters, Wang Fu(1362-1416), as “likeness through unlikeness” and Qi Baishi(1863-1957) as “subtlety of a good painting lies in its being alike and yet unlike the subject” Chinese painters attach great importance to reality, science, space and time and yet manage to disregard them at the same time. The laws of these things must come second to the requirements of artistic creation and should not become shackles that bind artistic expression.
Seal and Calligraphy
One of the distinctive characteristics of Chinese painting is the use of inscriptions in poetry of calligraphy and of special seals as part of the painting itself. This was a major contribution made by scholar painters. Its significance lies in its ability to express the theme and artistic conception of the painting more clearly and deeply while, at the same time, giving great insight into the artist's individuality, emotions and views on art and life. In ink-and-wash paintings, the bright red seal adds a final touch of beauty. When preparing the inscription and seal, therefore, the Chinese painter, in addition to considering their content, has always given great thought to the placement, length and dimensions of the inscription and the position of the seal on the painting.The simplest inscription consists of the artist's name and the date. Sometimes the inscription could include the occasion for the painting and the name of the person for whom the painting was done. It could be about the subject and style of the painting. Quite often the artist might include a piece of poetry or a literary allusion. These are all followed by the artist's own seal.The seals can be carved in stone. It can contain a name, poetical saying, a design or symbol which has a connection with the painting. The seals are pressed into a pot or tin of cinnebar paste, a scarlet red color, and are impressed onto the painting. The paste contains mercuric oxide, ground silk and oils. TIPS FOR TRAVELLING IN CHINA
Many people have a lot of misconceptions about China in general, and specifically Beijing, Westerners, especially Americans tend to think of China as a sort of unstable, militaristic police state. Actually, Beijing is a pretty safe place, and you can enjoy a pleasant and secure time here. Indeed, as a foreigner, you will often be given special consideration and a certain amount of leniency. Of course, you have to abide by the law and respect the culture and customs, but in general you don't need to be afraid of this city. It is a friendly place and Beijing people are cosmopolitan and well aware of the world outside. Sometimes you will get stared at, but this is usually out of curiosity. Hostility toward foreigners is very rare. Most people are friendly and willing to help out if possible.
Visas
If you are coming to China for travel, you should obtain a tourist visa from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country. It is more convenient for tourists booked through Chinese travel agencies to get group visas for their visit to China. Tourist visas are usually good for two months, but can be extended for an extra month at the Foreigners Section of the public Security Bureau. If you want to continue traveling in China for more than three months, you will have to leave the country, get a new visa, and cone back. It is not too much trouble to go to Hong Kong and apply for a new visa. You can get a new one is two or three days.(Even though Hong Kong is now officially part of China, going there still counts as leaving the country.) for a little more money you can get a six-month visa from the China Travel Service in Hong Kong. More adventurous souls can go to Mongolia, but you have to get another visa to go there. Whatever you do, don't stay in the country longer than your visa allows. The fine for overstaying your welcome is 500 yuan (US$55) perday!
It is wise to carry your passport with you at all times, as you need it to register in hotels, buy plane tickets and change money. Also, sometimes there are random checkpoints at night for passengers riding in taxis, of you can't produce identity proving who you are, you could be fined a whopping 5 yuan. However they usually don't bother with foreigners. if you lose your passport, you should report immediately to your embassy, as well as tell the public Security Bureau.

In the warmer months, T-shirts and light pants or shorts are the best bet. In the colder months, it is wise to dress in layers; long underwear and jeans, shirt, sweater and down jacket. if you want to go local, you can buy a cool army coat (jun da yi )for less than 100 yuan.
Communicating Language
Spoken communication has been a problem in China for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Different people from different regions separated by rivers and mountains tend to spread differently from each other. There are hundreds of different dialects in China , and many of them are like totally different languages, though they are all lumped together into the category "Chinese." The official language of China is Mandarin Chinese ,actually a northern dialect, and this is what the people of Beijing speak. Often when Chinese people from the countryside or far-flung regions of the country come to Beijing, they have a hard time communicating. So if you are having difficulty making yourself understood, you are not alone! Most hotel staff can speak English, so this is a big problem, But on the street it may be difficult to communicate. If you are going to take a taxi, get someone to write down the address of your destination in Chinese. Street signs have characters as well as pinyin (Chinese Romanization), so if you have a map, it is easier to figure out where you are, Also, nowadays most young people are studying English, so for simple directions and help,you can most likely get assistance from a younger person. If they can't help you, they will most likely do their best to find someone who can .
When addressing somebody, remember that in China, the surname comes before the given name, there are hundreds of surnames, the most common being zhang, Li, Wang, Zhao and Liu, so if a woman's name is Wu Runmei ,you should call her Ms.Wu. names are usually composed of two or three characters and ocasionally four. If a person has four character name, the first two are the surname and the second two are their given name. Women keep their own surname after marriage, so if somebody's husband's surname is Wang,it doesn't mean that she is Mrs.Wang. she is still Mrs. Whatever.
Business Hours
Offices in Beijing generally open from 08:30-17:00,with a lunch break of about an hour . Government stipulated work days are from Monday to Friday. Shops generally open at 09:00and close between 19:00 and 21:00 and are open on Sundays. Offices are usually closed on public holidays including New Year's Day, Spring Festival(the Chines Lunar New Year), when most Chinese take four days off, Labor Day on May I and National Day on October 1.

Money

The official currency in China is the Renminbi (RBM)or "people's currency. “the basic unit is the yuan (also known as "kuai"),which equals 10 jiao (or "mao"), which is then divided into 10 fen. Paper currency comes in 1.2,5,10,50 and 100 yuan notes. Paper jiao come in denominations of 1,2, and 5. There are also 1 and 2 fen notes, but these are rarely used as their purchasing power is exactly zero. As for coins, there are 1 youan ,1 and 5 jiao,and 1,2, and 5 fen(ahain, the fen are basically useless).
Changing money
You can exchange traveler's checks or cash at most banks, and hotels always have a money exchange counter. you can also get a cash advance on your American Express card, but for this you need to go to the Bank of China headquarters at Fuchengmen or the one at the Asia-Pacific Building (Ya Tai Da Sha)on Yabao Lu. To change money, you have to have your passport at hand. If you want to change money in a hotel, you usually have to be a guest there. Sometimes if you are not a guest in a hotel but need to change money there, you can just say a random room number, but this doesn't always work.
At present ,the RMBis not exchangeable on the internaitional market, so it is only usable within the country. So when you are changing money, don't change too much, because it is difficult to change back into other currencies. To change RMB back into your home currency, you must retain the exchange slips that are given to you at the bank or money exchange counter. Then when you want to go home, you have to bring the slips with you to prove that you are merely changing back money you haven't spent instead of taking out needed foreign exchange. if you lose the slips, you can change on the black market (locations vary , ask a Chinese friend for details),but the exchange rate is not so good. and of course it is illegal.
Credit card
sMajor credit cards such as Master Card , Visa, JCB and American Express can be used to purchase goods in large department stores. Credit cards cannot be used in small restaurants or small convenience stores. They are mostly useful for paying for really expensive things. They can be used to pay for hotel rooms and for meals in some of the fancier restaurants. You can also buy plane tickets with them. As mentioned above. AmEx can be used to get a cash advance in the main offices of the Bank of China. It is also possible to cash a check against the AmEx card ,but again , only in the main offices.
Wiring money
You can wire money , or have it wired to you , using a service called Money Transfer, which is a joint project between the China Courier Service Corporation and Western Union, this service allows instant money wiring to and from 100 countries. Places that have this service are:

Counterfeit Money
The government is cracking down on it. Still you need to be aware of this. Unless you have been here for this . unless you have been here for a while, it is not easy to spot. The color of RMB notes is hard to imitate, and counterfeit bills are usually too fuzzy, that is, the images and colors are not so sharp. The watermark on counterfeit money is also not clear. Originally, the way to tell real from fake was to see if the words "YIBAI"or "WUSHI"(depending on the denomination) appeared in fluorescent letters under the light. But the pros have found a way to imitate this. Now the true test is to see the color of the paper itself under te black light. If the paper appears bright, then it is fake. If it appears to absorb the black light. Then it is real. The final test is the dots. On each denomination of the yuan notes (nobody bothers fake jiao, not to mention fen), there is a corresponding number in braille in the lower left hand corner of the front side. It is hard to feel, but the dots are slightly raised on the surface of the paper. If they are not, then it is also a fake.
Radio and TV
Beijing's larger hotels have satellite dishes that can receive dozens of channels from all over the world. America's CNN, NHK from Japan and Star TV from Hong Kong are staples. Then there are many Chinese channels, the main ones being China Central TV and Beijing TV. For a Chinese perspective, CCTV2 and 4, as well as BTV1 all have English news programs in the evening at 23:00 in Chinese residential homes, channels from provinces and regions all over China are piped in through cable TV , but foreign channels are usually not available, with the occasional exception of star TV.
China Radio International broadcasts to the world around the clock in 39 languages and four Chinese dialects. 91.5 Easy FM features 12 hours of English broadcasting and Western music. This station also has news updates every hour on the hour for five minutes. Another English language and music radio program is 91.5 joy FM from 21:00-23:00.
Publications
The English-language China Daily (published seven days a week) and Beijing Weekend (published every Friday)is available in all leading hotels. Most bookstores sell the magazines Beijing Review, China Pictorial, and China Today (published in various languages),as well as the English-language Women in China.
An informative English monthly is Beijing This Month, distributed free at the beginning of every month at most star-rated hotels, the Capital International Air-port and major universities. Business Beijing , the sister magaine of Beijing This Month, is also published around the 1th of each month. To subscribe to the two magazines, just call 67152379,67152380 or fax 67152381 , for information.
Hotel shops also stock a wide variety of newspapers, magazines and books from Hong Kong, Japan, Europe and the United States.
International calls
International calls can be made directly from hotel rooms with IDD phones. Just dial the international prefix 00, plus country code, area code and number. Some large post offices also provide this service. Otherwise, look for roadside kiosks with the IDD sign. IDD calls have a three-minute minimum charge, additional time thereafter is calculated by the minute. Operator-assisted international calls have a minimum three-minute charge. Four-star and five-star hotels charge a variable service charge from 10 to 20 percent. For a collect international call, just dial the number listed in the section of Beijing Directory. The AT&T operator number in China is 10811.
Domestic Long-distance Calls
Direct long-distance calls (DDD) can be made from most hotels to some 2,000 localities throughout China. Visitors should dial the domestic prefix 0, plus area code and the number. Hotel service charges are the same as for international calls. Most post offices also provide this service. Alternatively look for roadside kiosks with the IDD and DDD sign. If your call isn't urgent, phone between 21:00 and 07:00-not only is it easier to get through but calls are half the daytime price.
Phone cards
Magnetic phone cards and IC phone cards for IDD and DDD are available in major telecommunications offices and large hotels. China phone cards are specially issued to offer DDD and IDD services in any direct-dial phone around the city. Charges for calls within Beijing are 0.5 yuan per three minutes, and there is no half price for long-distance calls. Users may buy the cards at the Beijing Long-Distance Phone Service at Fuxingmen. Be careful, phone cards issued by Beijing Telecom can only be used in phones in Beijing. Phone cards issued by the Post Office telephones. Cards issued by China Telecom can be used anywhere apart from the post office.
Medical services
Most hotels have access to a doctor. They can also help guests buy medicine or, if necessary, go to the hospital. Below is a list of a few local hospitals and clinics catering to foreigners.
Express mail services
DHL,UPS,EMS,TNT and FedEx provide express mail services for urgent documents, parcels and other items to more than 10,000 cities in 170 countries and regions.EMS is the only official one in China that can handle private letters and has particular advantage handling mail within China. The Beijing shuang Chen Express Co. Handles fast delivery of gifts and flowers within the city on request. Many express delivery services have offices in major hotels and office buildings. Check the building directory in the lobby for their locations.
Some 45 post offices and express mail counters at hotel business centers can also hotel business centers can also handle urgent letters.
Post & Teleommuniations Office
Besides regular postal services, this office handles remittances, money orders, telegraphic money transfers, international and domestic telephone and telegraph services. In the same building there is a Customs office for those who need customs clearance for postal items.
Electricity
Most luxury hotels have built-in converters in bathrooms for shavers, hair dryers, etc. Otherwise, come equipped, because an amazing variety of plug types are in use. The voltage is 220 volts.
Water
Potable water is available only at a few of the best hotels, so tourists should always ask to make sure. Flasks of hot and cold boiled water in rooms are telltale signs of nonportable tap water. Bottled mineral water is widely available in all stores and street kiosks and sometimes provided free by the hotel. Madein-China mineral water is usually sold at around 3 yuan per bottle.
Laundry
The Chinese Laundries so popular in the U.S. are harder to find here. There are also no coin-op Laundromats. However, laundry services are available at most hotels, usually via the floor attendants. One-day dry cleaning and ironing services are offered at better hotels. Quality of service and price vary. Try a few easily replaceable articles first.

History Of Chinese Kung Fu

Chinese Kung Fu is a large system of theory and practice. It combines techniques of self-defense and health-keeping.
It is estimated that Chinese Kung Fu can be dated back to primeval society. At that time people use cudgels to fight against wild beasts. Gradually they accumulated experience of self defense. When Shang Dynasty began, hunting was considered as an important measure of Kung Fu training.
During Shang and Zhou Dynasties, martial arts evolved to be a kind of dancing. Usually the dancing of martial arts is utilized to train soldiers and inspire their morale. During Zhou Dynasty, martial-arts dancing was designated as a component of education. The application of wrestling techniques at the battlefield received much attention from various states during the period of Spring and Autumn. The then emperor held twice wrestling contests every year respectively in spring and autumn so as to select excellent people of martial arts. At the same time, the skill and technology of sword forging as well as sword ceremony achieved rapid development. In Qin and Han Dynasties, wrestling, swordplay, and martial arts dancing were very popular. A well known instance was Xiang Zhuang’s Sword Dancing in Hongmen Banquet at the same period. His performance was very close to today’s martial arts. The application of spear play in Han Dynasty reached its summit along with the appearance of many other techniques of spear usage. It is said the Five-animal-style exercise was another innovation by Hua Tuo on the development of Chinese martial arts.
Starting from Tang Dynasty, Kung Fu examination was proposed and implemented. Excellent candidates would receive titles and awards through the examination, largely propelling the development of martial arts. By then martial arts had evolved to be an artistic form and an independent genre. It was gradually introduced to many countries in Southeast Asia. Today Kung Fu were honored as the ancestor of kickboxing, karate, aikido, and judo.
Song and Yuan Dynasties witnessed the climax of Kung Fu development. Practice of Kung Fu by civil organizations became more and more popular. Some organizations or clubs centered on the use of spear play and cudgel, and they were called Yinglue Organization; while others majored in the practice of arching and therefore called Arching Origination. Besides, there appeared another genre called Luqi People. They made a living as performer of martial arts all over the country. Usually their performance was carried out by a single person or two persons as a pair.
Chinese Kung Fu achieved larger development in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In Ming Dynasty, a lot of genres came into being and numerous books on martial arts were published. In Qing Dynasty, the ruling empire banned the practice of martial arts, and the folk had to set up various clubs or societies to pass down feat secretly. Therefore tens of schools of martial arts came into being, such as taiji, xingyi shadowboxing, eight–diagram shadowboxing, etc. Qing Dynasty is the times of integration among different martial arts genres. Wrestling techniques were introduced into martial arts, facilitating the improvement and mature of martial arts. This period is the shed between genres for appreciation and those for actual combat.
In 1927, Central National Martial Arts Society was established. In August, 1936, Chinese Martial Arts Team went to Berlin to participate Olympics. In 1956, Chinese Martial Arts Association set up Martial Arts Teams. In 1985, International Marital Arts Invitational Tournament was held in Xi'an with the establishment of International Martial Arts League. In 1987, the first Asian Martial Arts Tournament was held in Hengbin. In 1990, martial arts were for the first time listed as a competition event in the 11th Asian Games. In 1999, International Martial Arts League was invited as a member of International Individual Events Federation by International Olympic Committee. That was the sign of Chinese Martial Arts walking global.
Shaolin Kung Fu and Shaolin Temple
Shaolin Kung Fu are well known at home and abroad. The original purpose of Shaolin shadowboxing is health keeping, treating illness, protecting famous mountains, safeguarding ancient temples, self-defense, and repulsing enemies. It boasts of diversified patterns, plain forms, and rich internal and external work. The general style of Shaolin shadowboxing can be summarized as high value for actual combat with exquisite techniques. It emphasizes both quiet course and feat of strength. It can conserve strength instantly and let it out several times stronger than the original conservation. With such unique features, Shaolin shadowboxing is well known at home and abroad.
Shaolin Kung Fu comprise of shadowboxing, armed combat, free combat, hitting vital point, and grappling.
Shaolin Temple
Shaolin Temple is also very famous for the Shaolin Kung Fu. Shaolin Temple is located at the foot of Yufeng Peak at Dengfeng County of Henan Province in South China. It was built up in the 19th ruling year of Emperor Xiao Wen in North Wei Dynasty. According to record, Shaolin Temple was originally constructed in the period of Southern and Northern Dynasties. Shaolin shadowboxing became popular in Sui and Tang Dynasties, and soon grew stronger by absorbing the advantages of many other schools. It finally became the largest school of martial arts in China with branches all over the country.

If you are having trouble finding Chinese content to practice listening with, I found a neat site called tudou.com (土豆 - tǔdòu - which, as far as I can tell, means “potato”).
It’s basically a Chinese version of youtube, but it looks a lot nicer. When you watch a movie, the layout simulates a theater. I find that a nice touch. And just setting the background to black instead of “youtube white” makes quite a bit of difference in the experience.
I can’t navigate the site with any purpose yet because there are too many words I don’t know, but it’s easy to click around and play some clips in Chinese - some of which are captioned.
I think it’s a good learning tool. It’s easier than trying to find Chinese clips on youtube, and it streams a heck of a lot better than cctv.com (flash vs. WMV).

hey, the url above is wrong. It should be tudou.com instead of todou.com. Tudou does mean potato–couch potato. It is the website I usually search for Chinese-related video content, the largest one in China.

It’s perfectly legal in China. Millions upon millions of people here use it. Although there are tons of legitimate materials on the site there is some content that raises copyright questions, but if they MPAA etc go after anyone they have to go after the site developer. They won’t even bother though because they’ll get laughed right out of Chinese courts. No, not really they’ll just waste quite a few years trying to sue and not really getting anywhere. You don’t have to register and you don’t have to download any content. It literally is Chinese Youtube.

I just stumbled upon an amazing Chinese kid on Todou (http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/l8F9bi0tagw/) , the sound quality is way better than it is on Youtube. Wondering why I never found this site before.Anyway, if todou really means potato or couch potato in China, that’s quite an interesting fact since here in Taiwan, we use it for peanuts instead. And especially the kind that is whole (roasted or raw), with the hard outsides still on. (well I’m not a peanut lover, so I’m not sure about it, but anyway, we call potatos 馬鈴薯)

I am 99% sure 土豆 means potato in Mandarin [DICTIONARY]but I don’t know if it really is a short cut for couch potato ( 沙发土豆？). Interestingly, 马铃薯 also means potato: [DICITONARY]. I wonder if they are different kinds or something. Peanut in Mandarin is 花生, but I don’t know if that includes the raw and roasted kind.
